A novel about a boy, Jason, and his talking cat, Gareth, who can visit any moment in history that the cat has previously been alive in. They both travel to nine different points in world history (his "nine lives"). 
 
I've already checked for you and Mr. Peabody and Sherman came first. Also, the cat never tells the boy to be quiet as far as I have read.
